Undocumented Man Accused in Saint George Shooting

Dorchester County deputies arrested an undocumented suspect in a Saint George shooting and coordinated with ICE under a local immigration enforcement agreement.

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting on Old Spell Road in Saint George in the early morning hours Saturday, detaining a suspect at the scene and transporting the victim to a local hospital for treatment.

Deputies arrived at the address just after 3:30 a.m. and took the suspect into custody without further incident, according to the sheriff’s office. The victim’s current condition has not been publicly disclosed.

The sheriff’s office subsequently determined that the suspect is present in the United States without legal authorization. That finding prompted coordination with federal immigration authorities, a step that has become more common in Dorchester County as local law enforcement agencies have expanded their cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under agreements that allow deputies to perform certain immigration enforcement functions.

The case puts a spotlight on the working relationship between county sheriffs in the Lowcountry and federal immigration agencies. Dorchester County, like several of its neighboring counties, has invested in cross-designation programs that give local deputies limited authority to check immigration status during the course of criminal investigations. Supporters of those arrangements argue they close gaps in enforcement; critics contend they strain trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement.

The Old Spell Road address sits in the rural western portion of Saint George, a small Dorchester County seat roughly 50 miles northwest of Charleston along Interstate 95. The area has seen steady if modest population growth in recent years as lower land costs and the county’s proximity to the Charleston metro attract both residential and light industrial development. That growth has also brought a more diverse workforce into communities that previously had little experience interfacing with federal immigration systems.

Charges against the suspect had not been formally announced as of Saturday morning. The sheriff’s office has not released the suspect’s name or country of origin. Standard procedure in cases involving immigration detainers typically involves the suspect being held on the state criminal charge while ICE processes a separate civil detainer request, which can result in transfer to federal custody following any state proceedings.

The victim’s identity also has not been released. The sheriff’s office did not specify the nature of the injuries beyond describing the person as injured and transported for treatment.

Shooting incidents in Saint George are relatively infrequent compared with those in more densely populated parts of Dorchester County closer to Summerville and the North Charleston border. The county’s overall violent crime rate has tracked closely with statewide trends, which showed a modest uptick in aggravated assault and firearms-related offenses between 2023 and 2025, according to South Carolina Law Enforcement Division data.

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office has not scheduled a press briefing on the incident. Additional charges or updates to the suspect’s immigration status would likely come through a combination of state court filings and any public statement from ICE’s Atlanta field office, which has jurisdiction over South Carolina.

The investigation is ongoing.
