With dangerously cold temperatures expected over the weekend, the Community Resource Center and Project Cool Breeze will hold a winter coat giveaway.

Forecasters predict daytime highs in the upper 30s and overnight lows in the teens Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The added possibility of snow and the forecast wind chill could see the feels-like temperature near zero in some areas, and between five and 15 degrees for much of the Charleston metro.

State Representative Wendell Gilliard said a coat and food giveaway will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, to help keep people safe during the extreme cold.

People can stop by the Community Resource Center at 3947 Whipper Barony Lane in North Charleston starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, while supplies last.

The National Weather Service has warned residents to prepare for the arctic blast, which could bring the coldest temperatures in years to coastal South Carolina. The extended forecast shows the dangerous cold persisting through early next week.

Residents should take precautions to protect pipes, pets and plants during the freeze. Those without adequate heating should seek warming centers or other shelter options.

The coat giveaway represents part of ongoing community efforts to help vulnerable residents weather extreme cold events that can prove life-threatening for those without proper clothing or shelter.
