Weather officials warned Charleston-area residents Sunday morning to stay off roads despite sunny skies, as Saturday night’s snowfall created dangerous icy conditions across the Lowcountry.

“Although the sun is out, roadways continue to be very hazardous in Charleston County,” according to a text alert sent to residents. “We urge you to exercise extreme caution if you must travel today.”

The National Weather Service confirmed Sunday morning that the risk of accumulating snow has ended, but warned that “extremely cold temperatures are expected this weekend into early next week. Historic bitter cold will continue this morning.”

Minimum wind chills of 0 to -5 above zero are expected across the region, with an Extreme Cold Warning remaining in place for all of the South Carolina Lowcountry and Southeast Georgia.

A Cold Weather Advisory extends through Monday morning. Sunday night temperatures will drop into the lower-to-mid teens inland, while areas closer to the coast can expect readings in the mid-to-upper twenties.

The combination of low temperatures and lingering wind chills supports the advisory for all areas through Monday morning, according to forecasters.

Relief appears on the horizon, with forecasters predicting rain by late Tuesday as temperatures moderate.

The weather service continues to monitor conditions and advises residents to check weather.gov/chs for the latest updates and safety information.
