Charleston Man Charged with Murder in Tripe Street Shooting

Charleston police arrested a 33-year-old city man in Florida on murder charges connected to a fatal shooting last month on Tripe Street.

Antonio Jamal Kelly faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in the Jan. 10 shooting, according to Charleston Police Department records. Kelly was taken into custody in Florida, though police did not specify which jurisdiction made the arrest or when.

The shooting occurred on Tripe Street, a residential area in Charleston’s East Side neighborhood that has seen increased police attention in recent months. Police have not released the victim’s name or details about what led to the shooting.

Kelly’s arrest marks the latest development in what police describe as an ongoing investigation into gun violence in Charleston’s residential neighborhoods. The East Side area, which includes Tripe Street, has experienced several shooting incidents over the past year, according to police incident reports.

“Detectives worked diligently to identify and locate the suspect in this case,” a Charleston Police Department spokesperson said. The department did not respond to questions about whether Kelly was arrested on a warrant or what led investigators to Florida.

Court records show Kelly has previous arrests in Charleston County, though details of those cases were not immediately available. He is being held pending extradition to South Carolina, according to police.

The Jan. 10 shooting prompted increased patrols in the Tripe Street area, residents said. Several neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots that evening but declined to speak on the record about the incident.

Charleston police have investigated 12 shooting incidents since the start of the year, according to department statistics. The number represents a slight increase from the same period last year, when police recorded 10 shooting investigations.

City Council members have called for increased funding for violence prevention programs as part of ongoing budget discussions. The council is expected to review public safety funding requests next month as part of the annual budget process, according to Politics & Government coverage.

Mayor William Cogswell has made reducing gun violence a priority for his administration, announcing several initiatives aimed at community outreach and intervention programs. The city allocated $2.3 million for violence prevention efforts in the current budget year.

Police have not said whether the Tripe Street shooting was connected to other recent incidents in the area. Investigators continue to review evidence and interview witnesses, according to the department.

Kelly’s case will be prosecuted by the Charleston County Solicitor’s Office, which handles all felony cases in the county. The office has not commented on the charges or potential plea negotiations.

The East Side neighborhood where the shooting occurred sits between downtown Charleston and the Ashley River. The area includes a mix of public housing, private residences, and small businesses along several main corridors.

Community leaders have organized several meetings with police officials to discuss safety concerns in the neighborhood. Those discussions have focused on increased lighting, improved emergency response times, and expanded community policing efforts.

Residents have also pushed for more investment in youth programs and job training initiatives, arguing that addressing underlying economic issues could help reduce violence. City officials have committed to reviewing those requests as part of upcoming budget deliberations.

The Charleston Police Department’s violent crimes unit is handling the Kelly investigation. The unit was expanded last year with additional detectives and resources specifically dedicated to gun violence cases.

Police have not set a timeline for Kelly’s extradition to Charleston. Florida authorities are coordinating with Charleston detectives to complete the transfer process, according to the police department.

Kelly is expected to make his first court appearance in Charleston once extradition is completed. Bond will be set by a Charleston County magistrate judge.

Anyone with information about the Tripe Street shooting is asked to contact Charleston police at 843-743-7200 or Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111. Crime Stoppers callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
