Juvenile Charged in North Charleston Area Shooting
A juvenile faces charges after a woman was shot at a Goose Creek residence Thursday afternoon, marking another gun violence incident in the Charleston region.
A juvenile has been charged in connection with a shooting Thursday afternoon that wounded a woman at a residence on North Pandora Drive in Goose Creek, police said.
Goose Creek Police responded to a 911 call about the shooting and found Arianna Epps with a gunshot wound, according to department reports. Epps told officers she had been shot, police said.
The juvenile suspect was taken into custody and charged in connection with the incident. Police have not released the age or identity of the suspect due to juvenile privacy laws.
Details about what led to the shooting remain under investigation. Police have not disclosed the relationship between Epps and the juvenile suspect, or whether the shooting occurred inside or outside the residence.
The incident adds to a pattern of gun violence across the Charleston region that has drawn increased attention from local government officials seeking solutions to reduce shootings in residential neighborhoods.
Goose Creek, located about 20 miles north of downtown Charleston, has a population of roughly 45,000 residents. The city has experienced periodic incidents of gun violence, though officials say overall crime rates remain relatively low compared to other areas in the tri-county region.
Epps’ current condition was not immediately available from police or hospital officials. Goose Creek Police did not respond to requests for additional information about her injuries or treatment.
The shooting occurred on North Pandora Drive, a residential street in a neighborhood of single-family homes and townhouses. Residents in the area said they heard sirens and saw multiple police vehicles respond to the scene Thursday afternoon.
“We heard all the commotion and saw the police cars,” said one neighbor who declined to give her name. “It’s scary when something like this happens so close to home.”
Juvenile suspects in South Carolina face different legal proceedings than adults charged with similar crimes. The case will likely be handled through the state’s Family Court system, which focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment for young offenders.
If convicted of charges related to the shooting, the juvenile could face detention in a state facility for young offenders or be placed in a community-based program depending on the severity of the charges and the suspect’s criminal history.
Goose Creek Police Chief Harvey Becker has not issued a public statement about the shooting. The department’s investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could be filed as detectives gather more evidence.
The incident comes as Charleston-area law enforcement agencies continue to address gun violence through various community programs and enforcement initiatives. Several local departments have implemented youth outreach programs designed to prevent juvenile involvement in violent crimes.
Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, which also has jurisdiction in parts of Goose Creek, has not indicated whether their department is assisting with the investigation.
Police have not said whether the weapon used in the shooting has been recovered or how the juvenile suspect obtained access to a firearm.
South Carolina law requires gun owners to prevent unsecured access to firearms by minors, though enforcement of such laws varies across jurisdictions. Violations can result in misdemeanor charges against adult gun owners.
The shooting highlights ongoing concerns about youth access to weapons in communities across the Charleston region. Local officials have debated various approaches to reducing such incidents, including expanded background checks and secure storage requirements.
Goose Creek City Council members have not commented publicly on Thursday’s shooting. The council has previously discussed public safety funding and police department resources during budget meetings.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Goose Creek Police at 843-863-5200 or submit anonymous tips through the department’s online portal.
The investigation is expected to continue as police interview witnesses and review evidence from the scene. Court proceedings for the juvenile suspect will be scheduled through Berkeley County Family Court.
Police plan to release additional information as the investigation progresses, though details may be limited due to the involvement of a juvenile suspect and ongoing legal proceedings.
