West Ashley barbershop killing unsolved 10 years later
Charleston County detectives still seek tips in the Jan. 15, 2016 shooting death of Antwan Green at Marvin's Barbershop on Ashley River Road.
Charleston County detectives are asking for public help solving the decade-old shooting death of Antwan Green, who was killed while sitting in a West Ashley barbershop on Jan. 15, 2016.
Green, 26, was on a couch inside Marvin’s Barbershop on Ashley River Road when a gunman entered and opened fire that morning, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. Green died at the scene.
No arrests have been made in the case despite a 10-year investigation that has included dozens of interviews and evidence collection, sheriff’s office spokesman Andrew Knapp said Thursday.
“We continue to follow up on any tips or information that comes in,” Knapp said. “Someone out there knows what happened that day.”
The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. at the barbershop in the 1800 block of Ashley River Road, near the intersection with Magnolia Road. Multiple witnesses were present when the gunman entered, fired several shots and fled, according to initial police reports.
Detectives have pursued numerous leads over the years but have been unable to identify the shooter or establish a clear motive for the killing. The case remains open and active, with investigators reviewing evidence and conducting periodic interviews with potential witnesses.
Green’s death was one of 47 homicides in Charleston County in 2016, a year that saw violent crime rates climb across the region. The county has since implemented various crime reduction initiatives, though other local government news continues to focus on public safety funding and resource allocation.
The barbershop shooting highlighted ongoing concerns about violence in commercial areas along Ashley River Road, a corridor that has seen significant development pressure in recent years. Local business owners have repeatedly called for increased law enforcement presence in the area during city and county budget discussions.
Witnesses who were in the barbershop that morning provided initial statements to investigators, but police say they need additional information to move the case forward. The sheriff’s office has not released details about potential suspects or whether the shooting was targeted or random.
“Cold cases like this often break when someone who has been reluctant to come forward finally decides to speak up,” said retired Charleston Police detective Mark Williams, who worked homicide cases for 15 years before leaving the force in 2018. “Time can change people’s willingness to cooperate with law enforcement.”
The sheriff’s office maintains a cold case unit that regularly reviews unsolved homicides, looking for new forensic techniques or investigative approaches that might yield results. DNA evidence and ballistics analysis have become more sophisticated since 2016, potentially offering new avenues for the Green investigation.
Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case. Tipsters can call 843-554-1111 or submit information online while remaining anonymous.
Green’s family members have made periodic public appeals for information about the shooting, though they declined to comment for this story. Court records show Green had no significant criminal history and was not known to be involved in any ongoing disputes at the time of his death.
The Ashley River Road corridor where the shooting occurred has undergone substantial changes since 2016, with new residential developments and commercial projects altering the landscape. However, the area still struggles with periodic violent crime, according to sheriff’s office incident reports.
Detectives assigned to the case have changed over the years, but all evidence and investigative materials remain accessible to current investigators. The sheriff’s office said it dedicates resources to cold cases when new information emerges or when technological advances might help solve older crimes.
“We owe it to Mr. Green’s family and to the community to keep working this case,” Knapp said. “Ten years is a long time, but it’s not too late for someone to do the right thing.”
